A concern with landfill processes is the safe containment of stored waste. Put simply, landfill constitutes the digging of a hole wherein waste is stored and then topped with dirt. If essential containment measures are not applied, two main factors can occur – namely the seepage of waste into groundwater systems from a process known as leachate (the formation of pockets of rainwater blending with waste materials to seep into the ground), and the formation of noxious gases derived from a chain of chemical interactions. The application of landfill capping liners can prevent such hazards, the liners forming an impermeable membrane to prevent the formation of toxic fumes and leachate. Although most landfill applies a layer of topsoil, they should also utilise further protective layers to facilitate drainage and that operate a barrier against waste seepage.
